The Saheli Trust’s “The Leafy Story” project is a pioneering initiative that embodies the principles of sustainability, women’s empowerment, and social responsibility. Originating in the hilly states of Uttarakhand, this project harnesses the natural resources of the region — Kanakchampa and sal leaves — to create biodegradable tableware. These eco-friendly products offer a unique blend of tradition and innovation, providing not only an alternative to plastic but also a platform for empowering women in rural communities. The Leafy Story project is deeply rooted in the sustainable practices of the past.
These leaves are not only abundant in the hilly terrain but also carry significant cultural value. Traditionally, these leaves have been used for making plates and other utensils in rural India, a practice that The Leafy Story project seeks to revive and modernize.
Plastic pollution is one of the most pressing environmental challenges of our time. With millions of tons of plastic waste generated annually, the need for sustainable alternatives has never been more urgent. The Leafy Story project addresses this issue head-on by providing a biodegradable option that not only reduces plastic waste but also enhances the nutritional value of the food consumed. The polyphenols in the leaves are natural antioxidants, which get absorbed into the food when served warm, offering a health benefit that plastic cannot match
Our Team
Meet Kiran who manages our factory. Her role involves overseeing production, ensuring quality control, and managing supply of leaves for the production. With a keen eye for detail, she ensures that the factory runs smoothly. Kiran being a single mother balances her professional responsibilities with the needs of her young son.
Meet Suman, she covers the distance of 25 km to reach the factory, the distance between her home and factory feels like daily trial, but it’s a struggle she is willing to endure. She presses the stitched leaves in the machine and gives them shape. Each press of the machine is a step away from her past, from the man who once made her life unbearable. Her divorce case is ongoing, the abuse she endured left scars, both seen and unseen, but it also gave her the strength to reclaim her life. Every leaf she shapes is a reminder that she is rebuilding her life on her own terms, determined to create a future free from fear
Meet Deepa, mother of two sons, working very hard to earn bread for her family. She covers a total distance of 10 km on foot to reach the factory. Her work includes separating leaves, stitching them together with the help of a sewing machine. It’s a humble job, but for her, it’s a way to support her family, to add a little more to the household income. The money she earns brings a sense of independence and dignity, empowering her to dream of a brighter future for her children.
